Inspiring Instruction Your Child Will Love

The Right Skills

In this program, your child will become a skilled, confident reader by getting lots of reading practice in the best books available. Frequent reading combined with fun in-class activities is the key to reading success and will improve your child’s comprehension, fluency, and second-grade phonics skills. Students who don’t read outside of school can fall behind, but your child will develop strong skills and continue to grow as a reader. Your child will come away from the program feeling accomplished and motivated to read more.

The Right Books

Your child will really benefit from reading wonderfully imaginative, deeply engaging books at the right level of challenge. The books selected for the Best Books Program feature interesting, funny characters and exciting adventures. These excellent books will engage your child’s imagination and heart. 2nd graders in the fall program read ten wonderful books, completing two or three 15-20 minute reading assignments each week.

The Right Experience

In the Best Books Program, your child will get a lot of practice reading and talking about wonderful books. This is the most effective way for kids to build strong skills, develop comprehension and get really excited about books and reading. This positive experience is at the heart of the Institute of Reading Development’s unique style of inspiring instruction.

Your child will attend a dynamic face-to-face online class each week. During class, our knowledgeable, highly trained teachers guide 2nd graders through reading practice in each of the program books and lead comprehension-building discussions, setting students up to succeed with every book. Every week, the teacher also leads students in fluency exercises and class games to build phonics skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Best Books Program right for my child?

All 2nd graders benefit from improving their reading skills in great books and getting in the habit of reading books for pleasure. Whether your child is a strong reader or struggling reader, outgoing or shy, this program will be a fun, meaningful experience.

What happens during the live online classes?

Live online classes take place once per week and last for an hour. Each class is led by a trained, enthusiastic teacher. Students can see, hear, and interact with each other and the teacher in real time.  Every class includes independent reading practice, comprehension-building discussions about the program books, fluency-training exercises, and a fun phonics game.

Who are the teachers?

The Institute of Reading Development hires and trains all of our Literature Program teachers. The teachers work closely with students to ensure that they are making individual progress and having a wonderful, enriching experience. Your child will love the teacher, and you will, too!

The Institute is very selective, hiring fewer than 2 teachers out of every 100 applicants. Teachers must demonstrate a true passion for books and reading and the ability to be warm and welcoming with students and parents. All teachers have a bachelor’s degree and most also have, or are working toward, a graduate degree.

What kind of internet access do I need to participate in the program?

A broadband internet connection with a common provider will work fine. (Prior to the start of live online classes, you’ll receive an email with setup and login instructions and a link to join the class.)

What kind of computer or equipment do I need for the live online classes?

To participate in live online classes, you will need access to a computer (Mac or PC), tablet (Apple or Android), or Chromebook with working web camera, speakers, and microphone. We do not currently support Kindle. While it is possible to access class on an Apple or Android mobile phone, we recommend using a device with a larger screen for the best class experience.

What will my child do between classes?

Between weekly classes, your child will complete an independent reading assignment. Each assignment can be completed in two days if a student reads for 15-20 minutes per day. This amount of reading can easily fit into your family’s busy schedule. By the end of our fall program, your 2nd grader will have read ten books at the right level of challenge!

Can I attend class with my child?

Parents are welcome to attend all or part of any live online class with their child, but are not required to do so. Many parents enjoy observing the classes. We expect the parents of our students to provide a lot of encouragement for their children. But we don’t expect parents to do it all themselves. We select the books, teach the lessons, and work with your child. That means that you can just enjoy watching your child grow as a reader without a struggle.

Is it possible to make up missed classes?

Yes, in the event of a scheduling conflict, you’ll have the option to take a make-up class. You can contact customer support to schedule a live online make-up class at another time or with another teacher.

How much does the program cost?

Thanks to our partnership with the Institute of Reading Development, we are able to offer this exceptional program to local families at a lower cost than other learning programs. During this affordable program, your child will participate in engaging weekly online classes and get personal attention from an enthusiastic and encouraging reading teacher.

Is there a discount for enrolling more than one student in the program?

Yes. Programs are available for students in most grades, so we encourage you to sign up all of the students in your family. After you enroll one student, you will receive a $20 discount for each additional student you enroll. This discount only applies to family members at the same mailing address.

What is the Institute of Reading Development?
