Inspiring Instruction Your Son Or Daughter Will Love

The Right Skills

Students solidify previous gains in reading speed and make significant new progress. Your son or daughter will review and practice Long Smooth Underline, conduct reading speed timings, and monitor his or her improvement online.

Your middle schooler will also learn more advanced skills for reading and studying textbooks and other nonfiction. Students learn how information in textbooks is organized and how to use the organization to help them read and remember. They identify main ideas and supporting details, and learn how to take effective notes.

The Right Books

Your son or daughter will really benefit from reading and discussing a wonderfully imaginative, deeply engaging book at the right level of challenge this summer.

Entering 7th graders in the summer program read one of the greatest novels ever written for young people, The Golden Goblet. This outstanding book features compelling characters and an intriguing story.  It will engage your middle schooler’s mind and heart and build his or her reading comprehension.

The Right Experience

Each week for six weeks, your child will attend an engaging and dynamic face-to-face online class. During class, students can clearly see, hear, and speak with each other and their teacher in real time.

The teacher helps students make personal connections to the book and leads lively discussions about character development, plot, and theme. Class will be the highlight of your son or daughter’s week!

Between weekly classes, students complete enjoyable, interactive lessons that boost skills and confidence. These lessons provide speed reading practice and advanced textbook and nonfiction instruction.

The Right Results

Reading and discussing The Golden Goblet will give your child the wonderful experience of getting lost in a great book. When your child becomes fully absorbed in a story, the world of the book comes alive. He or she identifies with the characters and imaginatively participates in their adventures. Your son or daughter will be changed by this thrilling experience.

By the end of the program, your middle schooler will find reading much more enjoyable and rewarding and studying easier and more efficient. He or she will head back to school with the skills and confidence needed for academic success!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Literature Program effective for all students?

All middle schoolers benefit from improving their reading skills in great books and getting in the habit of reading books for pleasure. Whether your son or daughter is a strong reader or struggling reader, outgoing or shy, this program will be a fun, meaningful experience.

What happens during the live online classes?

Live online classes take place once per week and last for 75 minutes. Each class is led by a trained, enthusiastic teacher. Students can see, hear, and interact with each other and the teacher in real time as they have comprehension-building discussions about the program books.

Who are the teachers?

The Institute of Reading Development hires and trains all of our Literature Program teachers. The teachers work closely with students to ensure that they are making individual progress and having a wonderful, enriching experience. Your child will love the teacher, and you will too!

The Institute is very selective, hiring fewer than 2 teachers out of every 100 applicants. Teachers must demonstrate a true passion for books and reading and the ability to be warm and welcoming with students and parents. All teachers have a bachelor’s degree and most also have, or are working toward, a graduate degree.

What kind of internet access do I need to participate in the program?

A broadband internet connection with a common provider will work fine. (Prior to the start of live online classes, you’ll receive an email with setup and login instructions and a link to join the class.)

What kind of computer or equipment do I need for the live online classes?

To participate in live online classes, you will need access to a computer (Mac or PC), tablet (Apple or Android), or Chromebook with working web camera, speakers, and microphone. We do not currently support Kindle. While it is possible to access class on an Apple or Android mobile phone, we recommend using a device with a larger screen for the best class experience.

Is there any homework in this program?

Between weekly classes, your middle schooler will complete independent reading assignments and interactive online lessons that improve reading speed and build textbook skills. Each reading assignment can be completed in two days if a student reads for 20-30 minutes per day. This amount of reading can easily fit into your family’s busy schedule.

Is it possible to make up missed classes?

Yes, in the event of a scheduling conflict, you’ll have the option to take a make-up class. You can contact customer support to schedule a live online make-up class at another time or with another teacher.

How much does the program cost?

Thanks to our partnership with the Institute of Reading Development, we are able to offer this exceptional program to local families at a lower cost than other learning programs. During this affordable program, your child will participate in engaging weekly online classes and get personal attention from an enthusiastic and encouraging reading teacher.

Is there a discount for enrolling more than one student in the program?

Yes. Programs are available for students in most grades, so we encourage you to sign up all of the students in your family. After you enroll one student, you will receive a $20 discount for each additional student you enroll. This discount only applies to family members at the same mailing address.
