Inspiring Instruction Your Son Or Daughter Will Love

The Right Skills

The best way for your high schooler to become a thoughtful, engaged reader is to do a lot of reading in great books. In this program, your child will improve vocabulary and reading comprehension. Students who don’t read outside of school can fall behind, but your 10th-11th grader will grow as a reader and stay ahead of increasingly challenging reading.

The Right Books

Your son or daughter will really benefit from reading and discussing deeply engaging works with true literary merit. The books chosen for the Literature Program feature compelling characters and intriguing stories with the power to engage the imagination and the heart. 10th-11th graders in the fall program read two of the greatest works ever written, completing two or three 20-30 minute reading assignments each week.

The Right Experience

The key to student success in the Literature Program is meaningful book discussion. This is what gets students really excited about reading. And better yet, it helps them understand what they’re reading on a deeper level. This profound experience is at the heart of the Institute of Reading Development’s unique style of inspiring instruction.

Our knowledgeable, highly skilled teachers are trained to lead discussions where every student participates, every student speaks, and every student is heard. Each week during a dynamic, face-to-face online class, the teacher guides high schoolers through one of the program books, reinforcing comprehension and discussing the book’s deeper meaning. Students have a great time talking to each other about themes such as hope, love, and perseverance in overcoming obstacles and come away inspired to live a life of purpose.

The Right Results

Reading and discussion will give your son or daughter the wonderful feeling of getting lost in a great book. When your 10th-11th grader becomes fully absorbed in a story, the world of the book will come alive. He or she will identify with the characters and imaginatively participate in their adventures. Your child will be changed by this thrilling experience and want to read more and more.

You’ll love watching your high schooler grow into a more confident, motivated reader who chooses to read books for pleasure. Our program provides everything he or she will need to develop a lifelong love of reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Literature Program effective for all students?

All high schoolers benefit from improving their reading skills in great books and getting in the habit of reading books for pleasure. Whether your son or daughter is a strong reader or struggling reader, outgoing or shy, this program will be a fun, meaningful experience.

What happens during the live online classes?

Live online classes take place once per week and last for an hour. Each class is led by a trained, enthusiastic teacher. Students can see, hear, and interact with each other and the teacher in real time as they have comprehension-building discussions about the program books.

Who are the teachers?

The Institute of Reading Development hires and trains all of our Literature Program teachers. The teachers work closely with students to ensure that they are making individual progress and having a wonderful, enriching experience. Your child will love the teacher, and you will, too!

The Institute is very selective, hiring fewer than 2 teachers out of every 100 applicants. Teachers must demonstrate a true passion for books and reading and the ability to be warm and welcoming with students and parents. All teachers have a bachelor’s degree and most also have, or are working toward, a graduate degree.

What kind of internet access do I need to participate in the program?

A broadband internet connection with a common provider will work fine. (Prior to the start of live online classes, you’ll receive an email with setup and login instructions and a link to join the class.)

What kind of computer or equipment do I need for the live online classes?

To participate in live online classes, you will need access to a computer (Mac or PC), tablet (Apple or Android), or Chromebook with working web camera, speakers, and microphone. We do not currently support Kindle. While it is possible to access class on an Apple or Android mobile phone, we recommend using a device with a larger screen for the best class experience.

Is there any homework in this program?

Between weekly classes, your son or daughter will complete an independent reading assignment. Each assignment can be completed in two days if a student reads for 20-30 minutes per day. This amount of reading can easily fit into your family’s busy schedule. By the end of our fall program, your 10th-11th grader will have completed two of the greatest works ever written!

Is it possible to make up missed classes?

Yes, in the event of a scheduling conflict, you’ll have the option to take a make-up class. You can contact customer support to schedule a live online make-up class at another time or with another teacher.

How much does the program cost?

Thanks to our partnership with the Institute of Reading Development, we are able to offer this exceptional program to local families at a lower cost than other learning programs. During this affordable program, your child will participate in engaging weekly online classes and get personal attention from an enthusiastic and encouraging reading teacher.

For complete details about the cost of the program, please click here.

Is there a discount for enrolling more than one student in the program?

Yes. Programs are available for students in most grades, so we encourage you to sign up all of the students in your family. After you enroll one student, you will receive a $20 discount for each additional student you enroll. This discount only applies to family members at the same mailing address.

What is the Institute of Reading Development?

A leader in reading instruction since 1970, the Institute provides reading development programs through colleges, universities, and other non-profit organizations. For more information, visit www.readingprograms.org.
