Inspiring Instruction Your Child Will Love

The Right Skills

In this program, your child will build the beginning phonics and sight word skills needed to read simple words and sentences. Students develop phonics skills by participating in class games and activities each week. They also play two fun card games at home and practice what they’ve learned in three engaging First Readers: Oh, Cats!, Sid and Sam, and Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill. Your child will feel a real sense of accomplishment from learning new skills and be motivated to read more and more.

The Right Books

The ten picture books in this program are delightful works that engage the imagination and the heart of young readers. They feature beautiful illustrations and compelling stories that will inspire your child to love books and reading.

You’ll receive a set of all ten wonderful class books. Your child will really enjoy the stories and want to hear them over and over again.

The Right Experience

In the Best Books Program, your child will have lots of great experiences with wonderful books. You and your child will attend a dynamic face-to-face online class each week. During class, our knowledgeable, highly trained teachers read great picture books aloud and talk about the characters and stories with students. Students also participate in fun book activities and phonics games in every class.

All of this helps kids develop a positive relationship with books and lays the foundation for learning to read. This experience is at the heart of the Institute of Reading Development’s unique style of inspiring instruction. Class is so much fun that it will be the highlight of your child’s week!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Best Books Program right for my child?

All 4-year-olds and kindergartners benefit from developing beginning reading skills. During live online classes, the teacher provides guidance for each child and shows parents how to support reading development. The program is a fun, meaningful experience for kids.

What happens during the live online classes?

Live online classes take place once per week and last for 50 minutes. Each class is led by a trained, enthusiastic teacher. Students can see, hear, and interact with each other and the teacher in real time. You’ll attend all classes with your child. Every class includes phonics games, reading aloud, comprehension-building discussions, and enrichment activities in great picture books. Class is engaging, positive, and productive – it will be the highlight of your child’s week!

Who are the teachers?

The Institute of Reading Development hires and trains all of our Literature Program teachers. The teachers work closely with students to ensure that they are making individual progress and having a wonderful, enriching experience. Your child will love the teacher, and you will, too!

The Institute is very selective, hiring fewer than 2 teachers out of every 100 applicants. Teachers must demonstrate a true passion for books and reading and the ability to be warm and welcoming with students and parents. All teachers have a bachelor’s degree and most also have, or are working toward, a graduate degree.

What kind of internet access do I need to participate in the program?

A broadband internet connection with a common provider will work fine. (Prior to the start of live online classes, you’ll receive an email with setup and login instructions and a link to join the class.)

What kind of computer or equipment do I need for the live online classes?

To participate in live online classes, you will need access to a computer (Mac or PC), tablet (Apple or Android), or Chromebook with working web camera, speakers, and microphone. We do not currently support Kindle. While it is possible to access class on an Apple or Android mobile phone, we recommend using a device with a larger screen for the best class experience.

What will my child do between classes?

Between weekly classes, your child will play two fun card games at home and practice in three engaging First Readers: Oh, Cats!, Sid and Sam, and Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill.  Playing the games and practicing reading skills can be completed in 2 or 3 10-15 minute sessions per week.

Can I attend class with my child?

You’ll attend all classes with your child and learn easy and fun ways to support your child’s reading development. Parents enjoy attending class and learning helpful reading techniques they can use. We expect the parents of our students to provide a lot of encouragement for their children. But we don’t expect parents to do it all themselves. We select the books, teach the lessons, and work with your child. That means that you can just enjoy watching your child grow as a reader without a struggle.

Is it possible to make up missed classes?

Yes, in the event of a scheduling conflict, you’ll have the option to take a make-up class. You can contact customer support to schedule a live online make-up class at another time or with another teacher.

How much does the program cost?

Thanks to our partnership with the Institute of Reading Development, we are able to offer this exceptional program to local families at a lower cost than other learning programs. During this affordable program, your child will participate in engaging weekly online classes and get personal attention from an enthusiastic and encouraging reading teacher.

Is there a discount for enrolling more than one student in the program?

Yes. Programs are available for students in most grades, so we encourage you to sign up all of the students in your family. After you enroll one student, you will receive a $20 discount for each additional student you enroll. This discount only applies to family members at the same mailing address.

What is the Institute of Reading Development?
